Rio de Janeiro is one of the biggest cities of South America. Spanning a large metropolitan area an receiving thousands, if not millions, of tourist and visitors each year it is one of the more popular and most visited cities of Brazil. The popularity of the city is perhaps owed to one of its most famous landmarks, and that is the statue of Jesus Christ the Redeemer which is located on top of the mountain which overlooks the city. It is viewed as a sort of a protector of the city and a unique symbol which characterizes the city of Rio. It is also an attraction which every visitor of Rio simply has to see. There are various tours which can take you up the hill in order to see the statue up close. But recently the image has been tainted by a natural weather occurrence.
Namely, during a three-hour storm which has recently hit the city of Rio de Janeiro, a bolt of lightning has managed to hit the already damaged hand of the statue and broke one of the statue’s fingers clean off. Even due to precautions take via placing several lightning rods around the statue, the lightning has somehow managed to find its way to its mark and to damage the statue of our savior. The authorities eligible for the maintaining the statue claim that these occurrences are bound to happen. Although several precautions have been made it is highly unpredictable to assume when or how the lightning can affect the statue. It is estimated that the statue of Jesus Christ on top of mountain Corcovado get hit three to five times a year by lightning and the people who have made this pool claim that when you put an object high up a mountain, lightning strikes are bound to happen.
Some fanatics have started taking this event as some sort of a sign and some even go as far as saying that it is an event which will test our fate and predicts a gloomy future to come. Others, on the other hand believe that this is a completely natural event and that it is completely impossible to protect a statue of that size erected that high up a mountain and that the occurrence of the finger breaking off was just a misfortunate outcome of a completely natural occurrence. The authorities have even now started making arrangements to fix the statue and plans have been made to refurbish it completely in order to preserve on of the symbols of this city and one of the wonders of the world.
The statue of Jesus Christ the Redeemer is truly a remarkable feat of human engineering and shows how talented and focused humans can be when applying themselves. The statue should be preserved and cherished so as not to lose it completely in an even worse accident.
